What to Expect in Your First Class It’s completely normal to feel a bit nervous before your first Jiu Jitsu class. The good news is, you don’t need to be in great shape or have any previous martial arts experience to start. Here’s what you can expect in your first class at Northside Jiu Jitsu. We begin with a short, easy warm-up focused on stretching and basic movement. While there’s skill to be developed in warming up properly, you don’t need any athletic background to take part. After stretching, we move into three light 3-minute rounds of positional sparring. Over time, this light sparring becomes more technical as students focus on achieving specific goals. In the beginning, your objectives will be simpler but fundamental. As I often say: “If you’re breathing hard, you’re going too hard.”“Drive slow enough to see the scenery. If you go too fast, you’ll crash your Jiu Jitsu car.” Next comes the technical portion of class. There are many ways to learn Jiu Jitsu, but at Northside we combine two popular methods: The ecological approach, which emphasizes live, goal-based training with realistic constraints. The rote drilling method, which builds muscle memory through repetition, helping techniques become smoother and more automatic.Both have their place, and together they create a balanced learning experience. The final part of class is around 25 minutes of full sparring. Depending on how many people are on the mat, the length of each round can vary. If there’s an odd number, rounds may be shortened to three minutes with brief breaks, so no one sits out too long. With even numbers, rounds often last five to six minutes—and occasionally up to ten. We may start standing, or from a disadvantageous position to focus on specific scenarios. At Northside, our goal isn’t to beat up our training partners—it’s to improve our Jiu Jitsu. One sign of progress is making Jiu Jitsu look effortless through efficiency and control. That mastery develops only through consistent training, discipline, and the humility that comes from losing and learning from our weaknesses.
