If you’re new to Jiu Jitsu, you might think “hygiene” is just how you say hello to that one guy named Gene. Or maybe you think it’s part of your genetic code that decides how tall you’ll be. If either of those is true, you’ve got a lot to learn — and not just about Jiu Jitsu. All grappling arts require close body contact between training partners. That means viruses, bacteria, and other nasties can spread if we’re careless. I’m not here to scare you, but I am here to raise awareness about hygiene etiquette in the gym. Here are a few ways to make sure you stink less at Jiu Jitsu. 1. Shower Before and After TrainingYes, I know — you have a job, you’re busy, and you’re “pressed for time.” Make the time. If your work is physically demanding and you show up sweaty, you owe it to your training partners to clean up first. If your work isn’t physically demanding but you still stink, the same rule applies. And after training, don’t linger in your sweat — shower as soon as you can. 2. Cut Your NailsLong fingernails or toenails are genuine hazards. How long is too long? Here’s the rule: if they’re long enough to scratch yourself or someone else, they’re too long. Aesthetics be damned. Cultural traditions be damned. Your “personal style” be damned. Cut your nails. Grow some self-awareness instead. 3. Watch What You Eat (and Smoke)I love garlic — just not before Jiu Jitsu. Cigarettes? Hopefully you’re not smoking, but if you are, your breath will smell like Satan’s asshole. Anyway, if you eat garlic or some other odiferous food, or if you suck Satan’s butt, read that again. If you’ve eaten something pungent or been indulging in your vices, brush your teeth (and maybe use mouthwash) before class. Your partners will notice — and they might even thank you. Bottom LineIf you smell good, you’ll stink less at Jiu Jitsu. Take care of your hygiene, respect your training partners, and we can all roll without wanting to tap out from the smell. Tap & grow.
