Athleticism is the racecar—but Jiu Jitsu is the driver.

A racecar is built for speed, precision, and raw power. But without a skilled hand at the wheel, it’s just a machine idling in neutral. In the same way, strength and speed are tools—formidable ones—but they’re nothing without the strategic mind and practiced timing of a Jiu Jitsu practitioner.

The seasoned grappler knows exactly when to accelerate and when to brake. Like an F1 driver flying into a tight corner or timing a high-stakes overtake, the Jiu Jitsu player chooses the perfect moment to unleash a burst of speed, apply crushing pressure, or conserve energy. This is where the art lies—not in brute force, but in knowing when to use it.

That’s why you’ll sometimes see the veteran on the mat, calm and composed after an intense, fast-paced round, barely winded. He didn’t need to redline his engine. He just drove better.

Of course, even the best racecars break down. Engines are replaced, tires wear thin, oil gets checked. The same goes for Jiu Jitsu practitioners. We adapt our game to deal with worn-down knees, aching backs, and time-worn joints. We swap reckless speed for timeless technique. And yes, we still get our oil checked.

Because in the end, it’s not about the horsepower. It’s about the driver.

力量無用,若無掌控——賽車與柔術的啟示

運動能力就像一輛賽車,而柔術,則是駕駛它的車手。

賽車為速度、精準與爆發力而生,但如果沒有一位技術高超的駕駛,它就只是一部空轉的機器。同樣地,力量與速度固然重要,但若缺乏戰術頭腦與時機掌握,那就只是徒有其表。柔術的藝術,正是掌控這些工具的智慧。

老練的柔術家,就像一位F1賽車手,知道何時衝進彎道、何時超車,精準地掌握力量爆發的時機。他明白該在什麼時候施壓、何時保存體力。這才是真正的藝術——不在於蠻力,而在於如何善用它。

也因此,你有時會看到那些在地板上激戰多回的老手,依然氣定神閒,幾乎沒怎麼喘。不是他不努力,而是他駕駛得更好。

當然,就像任何賽車都會耗損,柔術家也會。引擎會被更換,輪胎會磨損,機油也得檢查。我們的膝蓋、脊椎、關節也一樣會老化。我們會調整打法,以適應身體的變化,用技巧取代蠻力。沒錯,我們也要「檢查機油」。

因為到頭來,關鍵不在於馬力大小,而在於誰坐在駕駛座上。
